After a stroke

Dental care at home after a stroke

A stroke can change how someone chews, swallows and brushes. We help the patient and the people caring for them.

How a stroke affects the mouth

Weakness on one side of the face can let food collect in the cheek without the patient noticing. Changes in swallowing make some foods and liquids harder to manage, and weakness in a hand or arm makes brushing and cleaning dentures difficult. Over time this can lead to gum problems, cavities and sore spots.

Getting to a dental office during recovery is often the last thing a family can manage. Dr. Nath comes to the home instead and treats the patient in a bed, recliner or wheelchair.

What we do

  • Exams, X-rays and gentle cleanings
  • Fillings, extractions and other treatment as needed
  • Checking and adjusting denture fit — dentures often feel different after a stroke
  • Denture relines and repairs, and new dentures when needed
  • Hands-on instruction for caregivers on cleaning teeth, gums and dentures

Caregiver instruction

We show family members and aides how to clean the mouth safely, how to check the weaker side for trapped food, and which tools make it easier — such as a brush with a thicker handle. If the patient has swallowing precautions from their care team, we follow them during the visit.

Fees

The home visit fee is $350 on Long Island and $500 in New York City and Westchester. It covers travel, setup, the exam and X-rays, and you get a written price before any treatment starts.

A denture reline is $500; a new denture (any type) is $3,500 including all fitting visits and two adjustment visits.

We do not participate with any insurance plans. You pay us directly, and we prepare and submit the claim so any reimbursement is paid directly to you.

Common questions

Why do dentures feel different after a stroke?

Weakness in the face and tongue changes how a denture is held in place. An adjustment or reline can often make it fit and feel better.

Can you teach caregivers how to clean the mouth?

Yes. We show family and aides how to clean teeth, gums and dentures safely, including checking the weaker side for trapped food.

Does the patient need to be moved for treatment?

No. Dr. Nath treats patients in bed, in a recliner or in their wheelchair.
